First year watching nba. So after the preseason what happens is there a league and then championship, its so hard to track with so many games on at once.

@Uncle Duff pre season has no effect on playoffs placement, but regular season is the only deciding factor in determining the playoffs and can sometimes lead to slightly easier brackets for championships.
regular season is 82 games per team (four games against each same-division team and six other teams in the same conference, three games against every other same-conference team, two games against each opposite-conference team). standings are determined by percentage of games won, if there are ties, head-to-head against tied teams, then division winning percentage, then conference winning percentage are the tiebreakers in that order.
you could see the playoffs as two separate tournaments, one for each conference, with the winner of each tournament playing in the finals. for each conference, 1st through 6th automatically participate in the playoffs with their respective seeds, and 7th through 10th participate in the play-in tournament to determine the last two spots. 7 plays 8 for the 7 seed, then the loser plays the winner of 9 vs 10 for the 8 seed. playoffs are paired 1-8 4-5 2-7 3-6, so by this point the difficulty of the path for each team to win the championship is largely up to how teams over- or underperform, both in the regular season and in the playoffs.
