In nyc a jumpball is usually a check to the team who has the ball. So if I got the ball and someone ties me up, but I keep the ball and they didn’t rip it from me, they checking it to my team. On the flip side, if they rip it then they got a steal and play continues. So jump balls are just fight for possession pretty much.
