Players shoot more 3’s overall but they shoot at a higher percentage than in the 90’s. And Robert Horry was a part of the Houston rockets teams that shot more 3’s than any other team in history up to that point. Teams didn’t shoot alot of 3’s but those rockets teams did. Players are better shooters and taller and more athletic than in the 90’s, get over it

THIS is the topic i wanted to hear about forever. They need to convert stats from other eras to adjust for pace and therefore possessions to be able to have some sort of comparison. 25ppg years ago used to be top of the line numbers in the league and 30ppg almost never happened

The gather step has been terrible to see. It’s a travel and the league changed to accommodate it.

The people who think that players score now more because they are better are completely wrong. It’s much easier to score now period. Back in the day only great players scored 50 pt games. now you have Terence, Ross, Fred Vanvleet, and Brandon Jennings in that group. It’s not the same.

Horry was spot on with the travels and carries. We get it, protect the players but- the ball handling rules have definitely been relaxed. And, jump shooters jumping into defenders that are going straight up should also be an easy offensive call, called every time.

Before the pandemic numbers were already trending this direction…. and this season the schedule has been the most hectic with the most back to back games

Can we stop acting like analytics suggests that players should only shoot threes? Seriously, the whole point of analytics is to illustrate how affective something is by calculating volume and efficiency. If a player doesn’t shoot at least 45% on mid-range shots, then they probably shouldn’t be taking them. Team’s should surround their stars with players that can shoot threes so they have more space to operate. Shooting 50% on long twos isn’t as efficient as shooting 40% on threes. This is simple stuff.

    To answer Rachel’s question
    Every era introduces something new
50s prehistoric era with mostly white guys, no shot clock for a few years
60s first wave of black athletes entering the league shot clock still fairly new and teams playing at historic pace which led to inflated numbers, players started dribbling with 2 hands
70s most parody the league ever saw ABA players starting to cross over…
80s merger complete, 3 point line newly introduced
90s league at 28 teams almost at full capacity with addition of expansion teams
2000s decrease hand checking defensive 3 second violations
2010s 14 second offensive rebound clock, Zaza rule increase FT attempts and pace of the game, player empowerment movement most FA signings in nba history, player created super teams etc
You can’t blame this era on jus the proliferation of 3s or foul rules it’s been a slow progression to this point
Players from the 80s lament on the decreased physicality in the game but if you go back to when the game was first invented it was played in steel cages and ended with blood stained courts due to limited rules
Should the centers of the 60s and 70s be discounted cuz the rules were different and they could average 20-20 in their sleep

You realize people never discount Oscar robinsons triple double season and say that the league was playing at an all time pace and rebounds were also high due to low FG%….
wilt as a center had like 100 triple doubles in his career
Some players were jus skilled like that

Per-36 stat is the best stat to use. Divides their stats by their MPG then multiplies it by 36.

I think you have to find the league average of offensive stats to judge how impressive this is. For example: if I led the league in scoring averaging 28 a game that doesn’t seem like a lot. But if the average game score is 95 then it’s more impressive than the number sounds

its just the way things are, for a long time the game was about the centres and forwards,….just imagine what the guards from yester-years could do today with these rules

people will tire of this kind of play eventually and the pendulum’s gonna swing back resulting to stricter rules on travels and defense. It was exciting to watch a lot of highlight reels of 3 point shots and dunks at first but I tired of it fast because there is no defense…I don’t watch the NBA anymore. I give this brand of play 3 more years then the rules will be adjusted again.

Today’s inflated numbers with the rule changes to produce more offense have to be taken with a grain of salt. Clearly this isn’t what normal NBA basketball is susposted to be.
