As Rasheed Wallace famously would say, “both teams played hard”. This was a curiously low-scoring game by today’s standards. Spurs shot just 7/38 from behind the arc (vs Memphis 12/34), yet made it close with those two threes by Vassell and Jones.

It seemed like the Spurs figured out that Memphis has no true center, and that Vic could score inside, and it was working. But then they got away from that in the fourth quarter, and Vic reverted to trying to win the game with three-pointers. Especially that last shot was a bad decision (turnaround fadeaway jumper from deep), given that they were only down by two points. I mean, I sort of like that he’s thinking like a hero, assuming he would make it, but that’s not a smart play. Can’t they/he use his height properly when it matters, i.e. close to the rim?

So in the end, Vic shot 3/12 behind the arc vs 8/12 inside the arc. If only he had taken all of those 24 shots inside the arc, who knows how the game would have gone. But that’s just not how he rolls. People say he’s improved his 3-point shooting along the way, but that makes 10/44 in the last 6 games (22.7%). I get the concept of just letting him play, to figure out the NBA, but I’d rather see Pop teach him to play smarter, and have the team do smarter things with Vic on offense. That way he stands a better chance of coming up big on offense in crunch time, instead of lauching one three after another. It’s something to improve next season.

The Spurs must now go 7-5 the rest of the way, to match last season’s 22-60 record. And since it’s a tough schedule, I think it’s safe to say that they will end up worse this season than last. But everyone seems to agree that’s actually a good thing, because “they’re rebuilding”. But that same reason won’t be tolerated as easily next season, so they’d better figure out a way to reach at least 30 wins.

I’m so happy for my roommate. He’s a San Antonio fan and his team finally got a win over Memphis! First time since after covid, San Antonio has beaten Memphis!

What a clutch basket by JJJ. The spurs lost when they put Sochan to defend him instead of Wemby. Feels bad for the rookie.

My gosh I am so sick and tired of always having these absolutely insane near-comebacks vs. Memphis and then falling short every single time. Been going on for years. I could feel it coming when we somehow tied this game, I just knew they were about to hit another game winner on us and they did. Always happens to us man.

What a frustrating game. Some crazy highlights by Vic, and a whole lot of plays that should have been highlights but were ruined by fouls. (Including Wemby’s defensive plays that were ruined by his own team’s fouls lol.) Anyway, credit to Memphis, they pulled out the win.
