In a new feature on The Jump called “When Did You Know?”, former Chicago Bulls legend Scottie Pippen describes the moment during his younger years that he knew he would make it to the NBA. He also talks about the 1987 NBA Draft, when he was taken fifth overall and traded from the Seattle SuperSonics to Michael Jordan’s team. Finally, Rachel Nichols, Tracy McGrady and Brian Windhorst discuss what would have happened had the Sonics not traded Pippen for Olden Polynice.

I was in Chicago in the 80’s and 90’s, saw Pippen and Jordan play. Fans used to say, “Don’t give the ball to PIppen for the last shot.” He was amazing, but he was no Jordan.

I’m starting to dislike all the attention Pippen and Jordan and the issues involved with their greatness. Now there’s MJ’s agent saying Pippen was and is jealous of MJ. I don’t want hear all that and see that affect their relationship. I just don’t feel like we, the public need to know some things and every opinion from others.

Scott was a good player but he was obviously a product of playing with Jordan. That experience is what made him. Pip was a good kid. Chicago changed him. I can say he at least got the tools and mindset to turn into that bulldog because playing with someone like Jordan could also break you.

Jordan 3 years before Pippen: sub .500 win % in the season and no first round advancements in the playoffs.
Pippen first year without Jordan: 55 wins in the season and went 7 games vs the team that took the champ to 7 games.
Jordan after Pippen: missed playoffs and no winning seasons.
Pippen after Jordan: winning seasons and made it to game 7 of the conference finals.
